POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's soccer team wrapped up its weekend road trip with a hard-fought 2-0 loss at Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
The Crusaders (2-3-1) capitalized early, scoring both of their goals in the opening 20 minutes. Cara Bubonovich put Holy Cross on the board in the 14th minute, heading home a cross from Karenna Beckstein and Olivia Perez. Just six minutes later, Caroline Bierfeldt doubled the lead with another header from close range, again assisted by Beckstein.
Marist (0-5-0) settled in after the early flurry and created several quality chances of its own, outshooting Holy Cross 7-6 in the second half and finishing with 10 shots overall, including six on target. Crusader goalkeeper Aubrey Haesche was sharp in net, recording six saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Maddy Catalanotti kept the Red Foxes within striking distance, making three saves.
Kelsey Peduto and
Margaret Johnson each came close to breaking through for Marist in the second half, but Haesche turned away both opportunities.
The Red Foxes will return home to Tenney Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6, to host Iona in the MAAC opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
