BOSTON, Massachusetts – This past weekend the Marist Men's Rowing Team attended the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston MA. With over 12,000 competitors representing over 800 clubs and teams from around the world in 75 different events at masters, youth, collegiate and elite levels in front of massive crowds exceeding 300,000, the Charles is the largest rowing regatta in the world and a staple in the Marist Rowing Team's yearly fall calendar. Crews race in a "head racing" or time trial format in single file over a 3-mile section of the Charles River that includes some of the most demanding and technical steering through a series of narrow and winding turns in an effort to produce he fastest time. Marist University was one of the first teams to participate in the inaugural event in 1969 and last won the collegiate eight event in 1970. This year Marist was entered with two eights in the Collegiate Eight event and a four in the Collegiate Four division. The Team also hosted two alumni eights filled with past Marist Oarsmen.

nd just 0.2 of a second behind Tufts AND a dead heat with Purdue (to the 1,000ths of a second) but both of these crews received time penalties for cutting corners marled by bouys on the course resulting in Marist taking a definitive win in a time of 14:20.284. This time was not only enough to win the event but also marked a new course record in the event, topping the previous record set by Drexel in 2022 by 0.2 seconds.
Coach's Comments
"We are incredibly proud of the efforts of all of our crews this weekend who performed admirably, especially our varsity eight who took the victory in the Collegiate Eight. The Charles is an amazing celebration of the sport of rowing and winning here in front of the whole rowing community is a really special moment for our team especially having been so long since our first victory in 1970. Lots of thanks are owed to our alumni, family, friends, support staff and coaches. A win like this illustrates not just the speed of our current athletes but hard work done over the last 5 years to return to national ranking and rebuild our team in size and speed. We're excited for the rest of our fall racing calendar and the challenges to come this winter and into the spring!"- Campbell Woods, Head Coach of Men's Rowing
