Coach's Analysis:
We had a strong showing at the Princeton Chase today and it was a beautiful fall day to close out our fall racing slate. In our top crews we struggled a bit with our pacing strategy for this race with both the V8 and the A four going out a little bit too hard at the beginning of their races before losing steam in the closing stages of their races. This is not the ideal strategy for a race of this length and we paid the price for not being a little bit more patient in the early parts of these races. That said, the instinct to race hard is great to see and will help us a lot come spring time. The 2v8 highlighted the morning slate improving on their performance from the Head of the Charles and delivering a great finish ahead of some key A crews from rival programs. The 3V8 stepped out in the 1st session and had their best row of the week really showing what they were capable of. The 4V8 was a little bit more tentative in their first flight and left too much in reserve. In the fours, the B crew upset the A crew with a slightly more balanced pacing strategy and some smooth rowing. The A boat suffered from bad pacing but still posted a strong showing in spite of what they considered a "bad row" The C crew was only 30 seconds behind the varsity eight men and showed that they're in a position to push that crew coming into the winter. The D crew also rowed well and worked hard. In the 2nd eights flight the 3V8 rowed sloppy and seemed tired after their first heat while the 4V8 managed to have a more aggressive approach and pulled nearly the same time as their first piece in spite of slower conditions.
The takeaways from today: Marist has come a very long way since last fall at this same time taking back over 20 seconds from key rivals and putting some daylight between us and other teams that we were neck and neck with last spring. Winter training awaits and with it the opportunity to find more speed and development as we prepare for the spring. Overall we had an exceptional fall and we're looking forward already to a fast and furious spring racing calendar.! - Campbell Woods, Head Coach Marist Men's Rowing Team
