Balanced Attack Lifts Marist Past Binghamton in Season Opener

Six Different Red Foxes Score as Marist Earns 10-6 Road Win

VESTAL, N.Y. –  Sophomore midfielder Amelia Pirozzi scored a career-high four goals to lead the Marist women's lacrosse team to a 10-6 season-opening victory at Binghamton on Friday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Pirozzi paced the Red Foxes with four goals on eight shots on target, while junior captain attack Kate Gaven added two scores. Senior attack Jesse Manger recorded a goal and an assist, and freshman midfielder Megan Shanahan, junior midfielder Madison Leale, and senior captain midfielder Caitlin McNaboe each found the back of the net.

Junior goalie Megan Morris made 11 saves across 60 minutes to earn the win.

With the victory, Marist opens the season at 1-0, while Binghamton falls to 0-1.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • Marist jumped out in front midway through the frame as Gaven finished an unassisted effort at the 8:18 mark for the season's first goal.
  • Shanahan followed with a free position score with 4:26 remaining to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead heading into the second.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Leale struck just 13 seconds into the quarter off an assist from Manger to extend the Marist advantage to three.
  • Binghamton answered with four straight goals in a three-minute stretch to take its first lead at 4-3.
  • The Red Foxes quickly responded. Pirozzi tied the contest with an unassisted goal before Manger converted a woman-up opportunity off a feed from junior attack Kathryn Staker to put Marist back on top.
  • Pirozzi added a free-position goal late in the period as Marist closed the half on a 3-0 run to take a 6-4 lead into the break.
THIRD QUARTER
  • After the Bearcats opened the half with a woman-up score to cut the deficit to one, Marist regained control.Pirozzi netted her third goal of the game, and Gaven converted a free-position attempt to stretch the lead to 8-5.
  • Pirozzi struck again less than six minutes later, and McNaboe followed just 11 seconds after to cap a four-goal surge and give the Red Foxes a 10-5 advantage entering the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Binghamton tallied a late goal, but the Marist defense held firm and made several key stops down the stretch to secure the 10-6 victory.

  • Pirozzi tallied her first collegiate points and led all players with four goals.
  • Gaven added two goals.
  • Manger recorded one goal and one assist. 
  • Morris finished with 11 saves in the win. 
  • Marist outshot Binghamton 33-25 and held a 21-13 edge in ground balls.
