Softball Sweeps Home Doubleheader Against Niagara

Pusey Notches Four Hits; Metzger & Blanchard Deliver Stellar Pitching Performances

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist University softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader from Niagara on Saturday afternoon at Gartland Field.
 
The Red Foxes earned a 2-1 victory in game one, and then prevailed 10-2 in five innings in game two.
 
Game One
  • The game was scoreless until the top of fifth, when Sophia Chemotti's RBIs single gave Niagara a 1-0 lead.
  • The Red Foxes scored both of their runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sienna Kunze drew a leadoff walk, and she scored on a one-out single by Peyton Pusey. Annabelle Geiser followed with a sacrifice fly, which brought home Marissa Scarano with what proved to be the game-winning run.
  • After Marist took the lead, Ava Metzger pitched 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh as she earned her third straight win. Metzger allowed just three hits and one walk, and she struck out six. The lone run she gave up was unearned, and she needed just 89 pitches to get through seven innings.
  • Pusey had two of Marist's three hits.
 
Game Two
  • Marist scored three times in the bottom of the first. Livia Wiltsie's sacrifice fly brought home Annabelle Geiser, and Sienna Kunze's two-run single scored Haley Ahr and Samantha Rogers.
  • Peyton Pusey's solo homer gave Marist a 4-0 lead in the second.
  • Niagara cut its deficit in half with single runs in the third and fourth. Carmella Phelan's RBI single brought home CJ Haney with the game's first run. Jolyn Gibbons then homered to cap off a nine-pitch at bat in the fourth.
  • Marist broke the lead open with a five-run fifth, which included a three-run homer by Kunze.
  • With one out in the fifth, Pusey's second homer of the game gave Marist the win by the mercy rule.
  • Pusey, Geiser, and Kunze finished with two hits apiece.
  • Kunze was 2-for-3 with five RBIs.
  • Pusey was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk to go along with her two homers.
  • Geiser was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
  • Ahr was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
  • Stella Blanchard went all five innings for her fifth win of the season. Blanchard allowed just four hits and a walk while recording eight strikeouts.
 
Notes
  • Marist has won 18 straight MAAC regular-season games.
  • Marist has won its last 12 games at Gartland Field.
  • Marist has allowed just one earned run in 26 innings in MAAC play.
  • Metzger has won her last three starts, and has allowed just one earned run in 21 innings in this span.
  • Pusey was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs on the day.
