Second-Half Surge Lifts California Past Marist in Berkeley

Red Foxes Lead 7-5 at Halftime Before Being Outscored 13-3

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Marist University women's lacrosse team fell to California, 18-10, on Monday evening at California Memorial Stadium.

The Red Foxes opened the game strong and held a 7-5 advantage at halftime before being outscored 13-3 in the second half.

Sophomore midfielder Amelia Pirozzi, junior captain attack Kate Gaven, junior captain attack Anne Shine, and junior attack Gabby Kingston each scored two goals for the Red Foxes. Junior attack Kathryn Staker added one goal, while freshman midfielder Isabella Dantuono recorded the first goal of her collegiate career. Junior goalie Megan Morris made 11 saves.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Marist opened the scoring as Staker found the back of the net at the 11:20 mark.
  • California answered less than a minute later to even the score at 1-1.
  • Shine restored the Red Foxes' lead with a goal at 8:15, but the Golden Bears responded again at 7:06 to tie the game.
  • Kingston scored at 5:42 and Gaven followed at 4:46 to give Marist a 4-2 advantage.
  • California added a goal at 1:02, but Shine scored her second of the quarter with 23 seconds remaining to send the Red Foxes into the second with a 5-3 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Kingston scored her second goal of the game at the 10:09 mark to extend the Marist lead to 6-3.
  • California responded with goals at 4:28 and 3:07 to cut the deficit to one.
  • Pirozzi found the back of the net with 1:17 remaining in the half to give the Red Foxes a 7-5 lead at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
  • California opened the second half with a goal at 14:23.
  • Pirozzi answered just 37 seconds later to push the Marist lead to 8-6.
  • The Golden Bears then closed the quarter with five consecutive goals to take an 11-8 lead entering the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • California continued its run early in the fourth, adding five goals to extend its advantage.
  • Gaven scored for Marist at the 5:39 mark.
  • Dantuono recorded her first collegiate goal with 2:22 remaining, and the Golden Bears followed with a late goal to secure the 18-10 victory.
