Marist Opens MAAC Play With 10-8 Win Over Rider

Red Foxes Storm Back in Second Half, Shut Out Rider

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist University women's lacrosse team opened MAAC play with a 10-8 victory over Rider on Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.

The Red Foxes trailed 8-2 at halftime before shutting out Rider in the second half, scoring eight unanswered goals to complete the comeback.

Junior captain attack Kate Gaven led Marist with four goals, including three in the fourth quarter. Senior attack Jesse Manger recorded two goals and two assists, while junior captain attack Anne Shine added two goals. Sophomore midfielder Amelia Pirozzi and freshman midfielder Megan Shanahan each scored once.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Rider opened the scoring at the 12:07 mark before Gaven answered less than a minute later to even the game at 1-1.
  • Rider regained the lead with a goal at 4:31 and held a 2-1 advantage after one.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Pirozzi tied the game at 13:09 off an assist from Manger.
  • Rider responded with six consecutive goals to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Marist began its comeback as Manger scored on a woman-up opportunity at 11:44 off an assist from junior attack Kathryn Staker.
  • Shanahan followed with a goal at 8:08 before Manger scored again at 7:13, assisted by Staker.
  • Shine added a goal at 6:20 off a feed from junior midfielder Madison Leale to cut the deficit to 8-6 entering the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Shine opened the quarter with a goal at 13:42, assisted by Leale, to bring Marist within one.
  • Gaven tied the game at 12:38 on a woman-up goal from Manger before giving the Red Foxes the lead at 9:42, again assisted by Manger.
  • Gaven added an insurance goal at 5:25 as Marist completed the 10-8 comeback victory.

  • Marist outshot Rider 32-24 and held a 22-12 edge in shots on goal
  • The Red Foxes recorded 19 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers
  • Marist won the draw control battle, 12-8
  • The Red Foxes went 19-for-19 on clears
