Red Foxes Defeat Iona, 14-8, at Tenney Stadium

Balanced Attack Fuels Season-High Scoring Effort

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist University women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack to record a season high in goals, defeating Iona 14-8 on Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.

The Red Foxes improve to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC, while the Gaels fall to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Senior attack Jesse Manger led the Red Foxes with three goals and two assists. Junior captain attack Kate Gaven recorded two goals and three assists, while junior attack Kathryn Staker added two goals and two assists. Junior captain attack Anne Shine scored two goals. Sophomore midfielder Amelia Pirozzi, junior midfielder Madison Leale, senior captain midfielder Caitlin McNaboe, freshman midfielder Megan Shanahan, and junior attack Gabby Kingston each scored once.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Marist opened the scoring just 39 seconds into the game as Gaven found the back of the net.
  • Shine followed with a free-position goal at 12:59, and Pirozzi added a score at 11:59 to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead.
  • Manger extended the advantage at the 10:00 mark off an assist from Leale, and Gaven added her second of the quarter at 9:10 to make it 5-0.
  • Iona responded with two goals at 7:22 and 5:23, but Shine closed the quarter with a goal at 2:07 off a feed from Gaven to give Marist a 6-2 lead after one.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Staker opened the second quarter scoring at 13:54, followed by a goal from Shanahan at 11:20 to extend the lead to 8-2.
  • Manger added her second of the game at 8:36 off an assist from Staker.
  • After an Iona goal at 3:11, Kingston scored with 58 seconds remaining off a pass from Gaven to give the Red Foxes a 10-3 advantage at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
  • McNaboe opened the second-half scoring at 8:12 on an assist from Manger. Iona responded at 6:32 to cut the deficit to 11-4.
  • Leale scored at 5:43 off a feed from Manger, and Manger added another goal at 2:56 off an assist from Staker to extend the lead to 13-4.
  • Iona added a late goal at 1:09 to make it 13-5 entering the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Iona scored at the 14:01 mark, but Staker responded at 11:51 off an assist from Gaven to restore the Red Foxes' nine-goal advantage.
  • The Gaels added two woman-up goals late in the quarter, but Marist secured the 14-8 victory.
STATS
  • Marist outshot Iona 44-17 and held a 23-11 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Red Foxes recorded 20 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.
  • Marist won the draw control battle, 18-6.
