EDISON, N.J. – Three members of the Marist University tennis programs earned Jersey Mike's MAAC Weekly Awards, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Junior Caterina Assi was named MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, freshman Tessa Wachtel was selected MAAC Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week, and graduate student Jose Catala earned MAAC Men's Tennis Co-Player of the Week honors.
Assi earned Player of the Week honors following a dominant performance in Marist's 7-0 victory over Providence College. Competing at No. 1 singles, Assi secured a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win. She also teamed with junior Vihana Shresta to post a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles to help the Red Foxes claim the doubles point.
Wachtel was named Rookie of the Week after contributing in both singles and doubles during the Red Foxes' sweep of Providence. Wachtel partnered with sophomore Viktoria Lorentzon for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles and added a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles.
On the men's side, Catala earned Co-Player of the Week honors after helping lead Marist to a 4-0 sweep of St. Bonaventure. Catala recorded a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles over Connor Turner and teamed with sophomore Gregor Heinemann for a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
The Marist men's team returns to action at Army West Point on Friday, March 6 at 4 p.m., while the women travel to Loyola University Maryland on Friday, March 13 for a 2 p.m. match.
