Marist Drops NCAA Opener at #11 Texas Tech

Pusey Extends Hitting Streak to 12, Ahr Delivers Two-Run Double

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Marist University softball team fell to #11 Texas Tech in first-round NCAA Regional play on Friday by a score of 10-3.
 
The game had a lightning and rain delay of 1 hour, 42 minutes in the top of the fourth.
 
Summary
  • Marist got on the board in the top of the first. Peyton Pusey led off with a bunt single, and she scored on a two-out double by Sienna Kunze.
  • Texas Tech tied the game in the bottom of the first when Jasmyn Burns' single brought home Kaitlyn Terry.
  • The Red Raiders then expanded their lead to 4-1 in the second, as all three runs scored with two outs.
  • Taylor Pannell's two-run homer in the bottom of the third brought in the first two of the Red Raiders' five runs in the inning, as they expanded their lead to 9-1.
  • With Marist down to its final out before the mercy rule took effect in the top of the fifth, Haley Ahr delivered a two-run double on the 10th pitch of her at bat. This brought home Annabelle Geiser and Pusey.
  • Mia Williams' RBI double gave Texas Tech a 10-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth, which closed out the scoring.
 
Stats
  • Marist finished with four hits, led by Pusey with two. The Red Foxes also had Kunze's first-inning double and a pinch-hit single by Maia Salvo in the fifth.
  • Isabella Manory and Samantha Rogers also reached on walks.
  • Ava Metzger started, and she went two-plus innings. Stella Blanchard tossed three innings of relief, including a scoreless fourth. Kaylie DeChicchis pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth, which included an 8-3 double play on a fly ball hit to Pusey.
  • Texas Tech totaled 12 hits, with five Red Raiders totaling two apiece.
  • Kaitlyn Terry pitched the first four innings to earn the win in the circle. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two doubles, and an RBI.

  • Peyton Pusey, Isabella Manory, and Haley Ahr officially became the first three Red Foxes in program history to play in three NCAA Tournaments.
  • Pusey's two runs gave her 243 in her career. She is now the NCAA's sole active leader in career runs scored.
  • Pusey has reached safely in all six of her NCAA Tournament games. She is 9-for-18 with eight runs scored in Regional play.
  • Pusey's first-inning single extended her hitting streak to 12.
  • Ahr has reached safely in 18 straight games. In this span, she has driven in 25 runs.
  • Kunze has eight RBIs in her last seven games.
  • The loss snapped the Red Foxes' 17-game winning streak, which was the nation's second longest behind Nebraska.
