ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Marist women's soccer team fell to Navy, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
The Red Foxes (0-5-0) jumped out to an early lead behind a goal from sophomore defender
Sophia Dorsey in the 13th minute. Dorsey found the back of the net at 12:33 to put Marist ahead 1-0.
Marist carried its advantage for much of the opening half before Navy (4-2-1) leveled the contest with 5:02 remaining before halftime. Katia Katsari-Hoefer scored at 39:58, with Faith Graziano and Sofia Grundy credited with assists, sending the teams into the break tied, 1-1.
Navy took its first lead of the afternoon in the 52nd minute when Jessica Black scored off an assist from Chiara Cosenza. The Midshipmen added an insurance goal in the 75th minute, as Graziano found the back of the net to make it 3-1.
The Red Foxes continued to battle in the final 15 minutes, generating opportunities from
Ariana Mullin and
Marissa Foster, but Navy goalkeeper Natasha Stramrood made two saves during the closing stretch to preserve the Midshipmen's two-goal advantage.
Marist finished the afternoon with nine shots, including five on goal, while Navy recorded 11 shots with seven on frame. The Red Foxes also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Samantha Graf made four saves in the opening half for Marist, while
Nelly Bianchi-Nagle played the second half.
Dorsey led Marist with one shot on goal and the team's lone tally, while Mullin registered three shots and Foster added one shot on target.Â
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 5, when Marist opens Metro play against Merrimack inside Tenney Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
