POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Marist University men's soccer team fell to Mount St. Mary's, 4-3, in its Metro opener on Saturday evening at Tenney Stadium.
The Red Foxes fall to 2-2-3 overall and 0-1-0 in Metro play, while the Mountaineers improve to 1-2-4 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.
- Junior Caio Cavaletti opened the scoring in the 26th minute after a give-and-go with junior captain Chris Verheul. Cavaletti finished the play to give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead.
- Mount St. Mary's found the equalizer in the 41st minute when Lincoln Bauer found the back of the net, sending the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
- The Mountaineers regained the lead in the 66th minute when Daniel Morales Silva scored off an assist from Lincoln Bauer.
- Marist answered in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Ronan Hogg drilled a shot from 25 yards out that was initially saved by the Mountaineers' goalkeeper, but Mani Diop buried the rebound to tie the match at 2-2.
- The Red Foxes took the lead again just over three minutes later when Cavaletti set up Verheul, who finished to make it 3-2.
- Mount St. Mary's responded with two goals in a span of less than five minutes. Morales Silva scored his second of the night in the 78th minute before Abou Cherif scored the eventual game-winner in the 83rd minute.
- Cavaletti recorded one goal and one assist.
- Verheul recorded one goal and one assist.
- Diop scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
- Hogg recorded his second assist of the season.
- Marist outshot Mount St. Mary's, 17-10, and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- Freshman goalkeeper Gavin Mitlitski made three saves.
- The Red Foxes travel for a Metro matchup against Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
- Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
