In his senior season, Cavanaugh helped Sparta win its conference, league, and county championships as the team earned a #1 seed in the state championships. He averaged 14 points, seven assists, and five rebounds per game while being named All-Area Player of the Year and to the New Jersey North/South All-Star Game. As a junior, Cavanaugh averaged 16 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks per game, and he was First Team All-Conference and Third Team All-State. Cavanaugh was a four-year All-County & All-League selection who topped 1,000 points in his scholastic career.
