- McCool is an elite passer who can knock down three-pointers. At Souhegan High School, he served as team captain, and was his team's Offensive Player of the Year and Sportsmanship Award winner in multiple seasons.
- He also earned his high school's athletic award for Academic Excellence.
- McCool was twice named New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Organization Second Team All-State, and was named New Hampshire SportsPage First Team All-State as a junior.
- In his prep year at South Kent, McCool shot nearly 57 percent from the field and averaged almost five rebounds per game. He served as team captain and earned the program's Leadership Award.
