Prior to Marist: In one season at Canisius High School as a freshman, Cancilla led his team to its first Catholic State Championship in soccer. He was a First Team All-Catholic selection and named Offensive MVP of the Monsignor Martin League. He spent the next three years as a starter at Empire United Development Academy where he won a pair of Western New York State Cups and two National League titles along with competing as a starter in the USSF Development Academy. Internationally, Cancilla competed in the Olympic Development Program as a Regional Team player for Region I and he was a starter for New York West ODP. He competed in tournaments in Italy and Croatia and was an interregional trip player in Chula Vista and Phoenix.
