Prior to Marist: A versatile and talented midfielder and defender, Avila attended North Haven High School and earned four varsity letters. Avila played for Beachside Academy in the United States Soccer Developmental Academy for four seasons, and was a two-time team captain leading his team to a playoff appearance in 2016 and a quarter final appearance during the 2015 season. During his academy career, Joao started in a total of 64 games scoring 6 goals. Joao was also a member of the Providence College soccer team that were Big East regular season champions and made it to the Elite Eight of the national tournament during the 2016 season.
