POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team earned its third straight victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Red Foxes defeated Butler 35-14 in a Pioneer Football League contest at Tenney Stadium.

Marist scored the game's first 21 points. On the Red Foxes' first play from scrimmage sophomore quarterback Michael White found freshman wide receiver Juston Christian for a 60-yard touchdown just 21 seconds into the contest.

White finished the game 14-for-24 with 296 passing yards along with two touchdowns and an interception. Christian led the Red Foxes with five receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, senior Garrett Clay ran for a team-high 65 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. Junior Marcellus Calhoun had 23 rushing yards on seven carries and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Marist held Butler scoreless for the first 36 minutes. The Bulldogs' first six drives resulted in five punts and a fumble. 

Fifth-year senior free safety Zach Adler led Marist with nine tackles, and added two pass break-ups. The Red Foxes had seven tackles for losses, three sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception and nine pass break-ups in the game.

In the first quarter, on the first play of a drive after a Marist turnover, senior linebacker Jesse Mainiero had a strip-sack, and senior defensive end John Brennan recovered the fumble. Two drives later, Marist expanded its lead to 14-0 on a 13-yard touchdown run by Calhoun. The touchdown was set up on a 49-yard pass play from White to fifth-year senior receiver Matt Tralli. The Red Foxes expanded their lead to 21-0 just 48 seconds into the second quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by Clay, which was set up by a 33-yard pass from White to Christian.

The lead remained 21-0 in favor of Marist until the 5:42 mark of the third quarter, when Butler quarterback Matt Shiltz scored on a one-yard touchdown run. With 12:13 left in the fourth quarter, fifth-year senior defensive end Demetrius Williams forced a fumble that junior linebacker Jimmy Braun recovered on the Marist 1. Calhoun scored on a one-yard plunge one play later.

White's 39-yard touchdown pass to Christian gave Marist its largest lead at 35-7 with exactly nine minutes to play. A two-yard touchdown run by John Hall with 4:37 left closed out the scoring.

Both teams are now 4-4 overall. Marist is 3-2 in the PFL, while Butler is 2-3.

Marist returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 7 with a home contest against Stetson. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Terrence Fede bobblehead. Tickets are on sale at GoRedFoxes.com.

Notes: Christian exceeded 100 receiving yards on Marist's first two plays from scrimmage. After the 60-yard touchdown on the Red Foxes' first play of the day, Marist's first play of its second drive was a 42-yard White-to-Christian connection. … Christian is averaging 26.4 yards per reception, and 12 of his 25 catches have gone for over 20 yards. … Christian's 171 receiving yards were a career high. In his first six collegiate games, he has three contests with over 100 yards receiving, and five of over 80. … This is the first time in the three Marist-Butler games that the home team has prevailed. … White is 4-2 as a starter. He has thrown for over 200 yards in all six of his starts. … Marist outgained Butler 390-318, but the Bulldogs had a 36:45-23:15 edge in time of possession. … Butler had six drives over three minutes. Marist's longest drive was 2:41.
