Poughkeepsie, NY---The Marist College men's (5-0) and women's (4-1) swimming and diving teams defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponents St. Peter's and Fairfield, this afternoon at the McCann Center Natatorium. The men's team was victorious against Fairfield, 148-87, and St. Peter's, 149-50. The women's beat Fairfield 136-97, and St. Peter's, 135-60.
In the men's competition, junior Mike Guman (Stratford, Conn) claimed victories on the boards, winning the 1-meter (269.48) and 3-meter (237.75) dives. Other highlights of the meet came from senior Justin Burkhardt (Milford, NH), who captured the win in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:06.88), and from freshman Matt Castillo (Jamaica, NY), who touched first in the 400-yard individual medley (4:11.49).
On the women's side, freshman Jennifer Gelsomino (Harrison, NY) had a pair of wins in the 400-yard individual medley (4:38.68) and in the 200 butterfly (2:13.24). Gelsomino broke the school record in the 400 individual medley, erasing the old mark of 4:39.83 set by Kenna Moran in 1997. Sophomores Jennifer Meyer (Fairport, NY) and Amber Van De Carr (Rhinebeck, NY) went unbeaten in their events, with Meyer winning the 50 freestyle (25.75) and the 100 freestyle (56.24), and Van De Carr having top scores in the 1-meter (208.35) and 3-meter (229.95) dives.
Marist will next face Colgate University, Loyola College, and Niagara University at the Colgate Invitational beginning on Friday, November 30th, at 5:00 p.m., in Harrison, NY.
