Bowling Green, OH - The Marist college men's basketball team dropped a 61-58 decision to host Bowling Green State University this afternoon at Anderson Arena. The Red Foxes (4-2) trailed by the final margin with 9.7 seconds left in the contest, as David Bennett (Salt Lake City, UT) took a three-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, but it fell short, sealing the Red Foxes fate.
Marist trailed 52-41 with 6:40 left in the contest, before closing the gap to three, started by a pair of free throws from Nick Eppehimer (Pottstown, PA), scoring two of his team-high 15 points. Sean Kennedy (Northport, NY), who scored all of his 10 points in the second half, drained a three-pointer with 5:25 left to cut the lead to 52-46. Eppehimer would convert a field goal and two free throws, combined with a pair of Matt Tullis (Orem, UT) free throws, as the Red Foxes cut the lead to 56-52. Kennedy laid in a ball with 2:06 left to make it 56-54. Marist had an opportunity to take the lead with a three, but the ball fell short, and had a chance to tie in the next 1:45, but were denied.
Bowling Green (5-1) connected on 5-8 free throws in the final minute of play to hold on for the victory.
Eppehimer had a team-high 15 points for Marist, 12 in the second half, while also pulling down a team-high eight boards. Kennedy had his 10 points in the second half, before fouling out, while also dishing out six assists. Jared Hunsaker (Ephraim, UT) played 21 minutes off of the bench for Marist, adding six points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Len Matela had a 21-point, 17-rebound double-double to lead three Falcon players into double-digits in scoring.
Marist was outrebounded 42-36, put turned the ball over 13 times, while forcing 19 Falcon miscues.
Bowling Green is 37-6 at Anderson Arena since the beginning of the 1998 season, and is coming off of a home win over the University of Michigan on Wednesday night, 65-59.
Marist will return to action on Thursday, December 6th, when Metro Atlantic Athletic Confernce (MAAC) foe Siena will visit the McCann Center. The game, scheduled for a 7:30 pm tip-off, will be the conference opener for both teams.
