Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Begin Competition at Loyola Invitational

Baltimore, MD - The Marist College men's and women's swimming and diving teams began competition at the Loyola Invitational on Friday evening. Also competing in the quad-meet are Colgate and conference foes Niagara and Loyola. After the first day, the men's team is leading Colgate 57-36, and has a sizable advantage over Niagara and Loyola, with scores of 75-17 against both teams. The women are trailing Colgate 47-27, but are ahead of Loyola and Niagara, with scores of 48-26 and 58-15, respectively.

The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Raymond Ferranti (Melville, NY), Jeffrey Paul (Meadowbrook, PA), Matthew Castillo (Jamaica, NY), and Ricky Kapusta (Stamford, CT) turned in a time of 1:25.63 for the win. Castillo also touched the wall first in the 400-yard individual medley (4:11.25), while teammate Joseph Pilewski (Sparta, NJ) came in third (4:18.92). Paul finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.65), as did Henry Puretz (Poughkeepsie, NY) in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:51.41). Michael Guman (Stratford, CT) won in the 1-meter dive (237.70) for the Red Foxes.

The women were led by Karen Finnerty (Midland Park, NJ), as she finished first in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:53.57) in front of teammate Emily Heslin (Allendale, NJ) (18:27.44). The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jennifer Gelsomino (Harrison, NY), Alyson Fiorillo (Pottsville, PA), Sarah McKinney (Schaumburg, IL), and Jennifer Meyer (Fairport, NY) came in second (1:42.35), while Meyer also placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.57).

The Red Foxes finish competition at the Loyola Invitational on Saturday, December 7th, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
