Red Fox Swimming and Diving Finish Competition at Loyola Invitational

Baltimore, MD - The Marist College men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the Loyola Invitational on Saturday, with the men going unbeaten, defeating Colgate 185-151, as well as Loyola and Niagara, 265-69 and 255-79, respectively. The women lost to Colgate 211-124.5, but defeated Loyola 245-88 and Niagara 254-78. The men run their unbeaten streak to 45 wins in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), and are now 8-0 on the season, with a 6-0 record in the MAAC as they clinched the regular season conference title for the eighth consecutive season. The women improve to 6-2, and are also 6-0 in the MAAC.

In the men's competition, Matthew Castillo (Jamaica, NY) won three events, taking the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.01), 200-yard butterfly (1:54.83), and the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.34). The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Henry Puretz (Poughkeepsie, NY), Raymond Ferranti (Melville, NY), Joseph Murin (Queensbury, NY), and Castillo won with a time of 7:08.96. Joseph Pilewski (Sparta, NJ) won the 100-yard backstroke (53.73), while Robert Dunn (Pittsford, NY) touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.35).

The women also finished strong, with Karen Finnerty (Midland Park, NJ) winning the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.12). Emily Heslin (Allendale, NJ) and Sarah McKinney (Schaumburg, IL) finished second and third in the event, respectively. Missy Gifford (Glens Falls, NY) won the 1-meter dive (207.50), while teammate Amber Van De Carr (Rhinebeck, NY) finished second (202.80). The Red Foxes also finished first and second in the 200-yard butterfly, with Jennifer Gelsomino (Harrison, NY) touching the wall first (2:16.06) ahead of Alyson Fiorillo (Pottsville, PA) (2:19.63).

The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, January 15th, when the women travel to Siena for a MAAC dual meet, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Both the men's and women's teams compete on Tuesday, January 21st, when they travel to Bronx, NY to face Fordham at 7:00 p.m.
