Red Fox Swimming and Diving Continue Strong Performances After Day Two of ECAC Championships

Pittsburgh, PA---The Marist College men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue to turn in impressive performances after the second day of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships. On the women's side school records were broken, while the men continued to maintain their second place position in the meet.

Highlights for the women's team were with the school record breaking, 800-yard freestyle relay team of Sarah McKinney (Schaumburg, IL), Jennifer Gelsomino (Harrison, NY), Karen Finnerty (Midland Park, NJ), and Emily Heslin (Allendale, NJ), who established a new standard of 7:53.43, erasing the mark of 7:55.59 set at last weekend's MAAC Championships. In addition, the relay touched the wall in 12th place. Gelsomino continued to score points in the Red Foxes' effort, as she placed 13th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:40.31). Other top performances on the day were in the 200-yard medley relay, with the team of Heslin, Cynthia Rowley (Holbrook, NY), Jennifer Meyer (Fairport, NY), and McKinney, placing 14th in a time of 1:52.17. In the 3-meter diving competition, held at the University of Delaware, Missy Gifford (Glens Falls, NY) placed 10th (356.76) and Amber Van De Carr (Rhinebeck, NY) ended up in 12th place (350.20).

On the men's side, the 200-yard medley relay team of Trevor Charles (Middletown, Conn.), Matthew Castillo (Jamaica, NY), Nick Lakin (Fairport, NY), and Ricky Kapusta (Stamford, Conn.) placed third in a time of 1:34.97. In the next event of the evening, the 400-yard individual medley, Castillo finished the race in second place (4:03.72). In the 100-yard butterfly, Lakin and Raymond Ferranti (Melville, NY) placed fifth (50.82) and 13th (52.29) respectively. David Dobbins (Rochester, NY) turned in a second place performance in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.62), while Kapusta ended up 10th in the event (1:43.43). The 100-yard breaststroke had Robert Dunn (Pittsford, NY) and Will Reagan (Waterbury, Conn.) claiming 10th (59.42) and 13th (59.88) respectively. On the boards, Michael Guman (Stratford, Conn.) earned a score of 242.05, giving him a fifth place finish on the 1-meter dive. The Red Foxes wrapped up the competition in the 100-yard backstroke, with Charles capturing fourth place (51.85), and Lakin ending up in seventh place (52.84).

The Red Foxes complete the final day swimming and diving action tomorrow, with the preliminaries set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
