Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2002 season this afternoon, with an 11-6 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League opponent Canisius College, on Leonidoff Field. The win was the first collegiate victory for first-year Marist head coach Edgar Glascott.
The Red Foxes, who improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play, scored six straight goals after allowing Canisius to score 1:14 into the first quarter of play. Trailing 1-0, Brian Diele (Stewart Manor, NY) took a pass and tied the score at 1-1 with 11:24 left in the first quarter. Josh Ben-Eliyahu (East Setauket, NY) put the Red Foxes ahead for good 44 second later, as he scored the first of his three goals on the afternoon.
Marist goalkeeper Brian Schumeyer (Farmingdale, NY) faced 28 shots, making 22 saves on the afternoon.
Diele would lead all scored as the touched net four times in the game, assisted on three other Red Fox goals, tallying 11 points. Ben-Eliyahu finished with three goals and Jay Nahama (Hampton, NJ) added a goal.
Senior Paul Donohue (Fair Lawn, NJ) continue his assault on the all-time goal scoring record, tallying three in the game, bringing his career total to 121, four shy of the school record. He also had three assists on the day for nine points.
Canisius, who falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the MAAC, received two goals and an assist from Rick Neward (Williamsville, NY). Goalkeeper Seth Vath (East Greenbush, NY) had four saves on the afternoon for the Griffs.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, March 23rd when it travels to take on Boston College. The game, set for 3:30 pm, will be played at Bentley College.
