Red Fox Swimming and Diving Wrap Up Competition at ECAC Championships

Final Stats

Pittsburgh, PA---The Marist College men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed competition at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships this evening.

The men's team finished in second place, tallying 420.50 points, finishing behind 2001 defending ECAC champion University of Maryland-Baltimore County (670.50 points). The Red Foxes edged out Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival, Rider University, who registered 325 points to finish third. The women finished in 15th place, compiling 84 points. The Red Foxes defeated Boston University (66 points) and West Virginia University (60 points).

Highlights in the men's competition began in the 1,650-yard freestyle, where Justin Burkhardt (Milford, NH) and Jeremy Virgil (Hamden, Conn.) finished sixth (16:33.26) and seventh (16:33.81), respectively. On the boards, Michael Guman (Stratford, Conn.) placed third in the 3-meter dive, with a score of 430.80. In the 200-yard backstroke Trevor Charles (Middletown, Conn.) completed the race in fourth (1:50.86), while Joseph Murin (Queensbury, NY) placed ninth (1:53.86). The 100-yard freestyle had David Dobbins (Rochester, NY) finishing second (45.74), with Ricky Kapusta (Stamford, Conn.) and Jeffrey Paul (Meadowbrook, PA) completing the event in fifth (46.34) and 14th (47.44). In the 200-yard breaststroke Will Reagan (Waterbury, Conn.) finished 11th (2:11.14), followed by Robert Dunn (Pittsford, NY) who touched 15th (2:12.32). In Virgil's second event of the day, the 200-yard butterfly, he placed 14th posting a time of 1:57.34. The final event of the evening, the 400-yard freestyle relay, was a new school record, with the team of Nick Lakin (Fairport, NY), Charles, Kapusta, and Dobbins setting a new standard of 3:03.32, breaking the mark of 3:03.90 set at last weekend's MAAC Championships. In addition, they placed second in the event.

On the women's side, Karen Finnerty (Midland Park, NJ) and Emily Heslin (Allendale, NJ) placed 14th (18:05.86) and 15th (18:08.91) in the 1,650-yard freestyle, respectively. In the diving competition, Amber Van De Carr (Rhinebeck, NY) placed eighth (195.65) in the 1-meter dive, with Missy Gifford (Glens Falls, NY) ending up in 10th (193.85). In Heslin's second event of the day, the 200-yard backstroke, she touched the wall in 12th place, with a time of 2:11.15. Cynthia Rowley (Holbrook, NY) scored points in the Red Foxes' effort, as she completed the 200-yard breaststroke in 15th place (2:28.97). In the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Sarah McKinney (Schaumburg, IL), Jennifer Gelsomino (Harrison, NY), Finnerty, and Jennifer Meyer (Fairport, NY) placed 16th, in a time of 3:40.60.
