Water Polo Drops Hard Fought 9-8 Decision To Hawyard

March 25, 2002

The Marist College women's water polo team played in a four-team tournament at Cal-State Bernadino on Sunday. The Red Foxes came out of the contest with a 0-3 mark on the day, playing three highly competitive games.

Alyson Fiorillo continued to pace the Red Foxes offense, as she tallied six of the Red Foxes 20 goals over the course of the three games. She scored three times in a 10-6 loss to MIT. Jen Gelsomino provided five goals for the Marist effort, with three goals coming in a hard-fought 9-8 loss to Cal-State Hawyard in the final match of the afternoon.

The final match of the afternoon against Hayward was a back and forth struggle throughout. Hayward took a 4-3 lead after the first period, and extended the lead to 6-4 at the intermission. Marist rallied in the third quarter, outscoring its opponent 3-2, to climb to within one at 8-7. Both teams scored once in the fourth quarter and the Red Foxes could not get the equalizer, falling 9-8.

Marist continues its West Coast swing Monday night when it plays Occidental College at 7:00 pm EST. The final game of the trip will be played Tuesday at Chapman College. That game is set to begin at 8:00 pm EST.
