Final Stats
Philadelphia, PA--The Marist College baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, but could not overcome host Drexel, falling 10-9, in a game played in Philadelphia, PA, this afternoon. The loss drops the Red Foxes to 8-8 overall on the year.
Drexel scored eight runs in the home portion of the eighth, taking a 10-5 lead into the final inning of play. The Red Foxes rally started with an Anthony Bocchino double. Mike Sidoti, who was 2-3 on the day, singled, and the bases were loaded when Tim Allen was hit by a pitch. John McGorty drove in the first run of the inning with a single. Jimmy Board followed with a ground ball to the shortstop, scoring Sidoti, and Allen, who scored on a throwing error by the Dragons second baseman, after forcing McGorty at second base. Jimmy Willis, who was 3-5 on the afternoon, followed with a double, and then Board scored on a Steve o''ullivan ground out. With Willis on third base, the Red Foxes chance to tie ended when a Matt Griffiths fly ball ended up in the glove of Drexel's right fielder.
Each team had 13 hits on the afternoon, with the Red Foxes committing one error, and Drexel two. The Marist error came during the home eighth inning on a failed pick-off attempts, which put the tying and go- ahead runs in scoring position. The Dragons, who improve to 10-13 on the year, pushed across eight runs on five hits in the innings, taking the lead for good.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Saturday, March 29th, when they travel to Lawrenceville, NJ, to take on Rider in a double-header. The three-game set, which concludes Monday, April 1st, is the first meeting of the two teams since Marist defeated the Broncs in the 2001 MAAC Tournament Final.
