Poughkeepsie, NY-Marist College head men's basketball coach Dave Magarity was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 2 Coach of the Year, it was announced Monday.
Magarity led the Red Foxes to a 19-9 overall record, the most wins since the 1995-96 season when Marist captured 22 victories. Marist also posted a 13-5 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play, this season, the highest win total since joining the league five seasons ago. The Red Foxes 13 wins were good enough to earn a split of the MAAC Regular Season Title, the first since joining the MAAC.
In his 16th season at the helm of the Red Foxes, Magarity has posted a 234-221 record. He has led the Red Foxes to nine winning seasons during his tenure, including the Class of 2002, which will graduate with a 66-48 record, and no losing seasons, the second class to accomplish that feat under Magarity.
A native of Philadelphia, PA, Magarity has been a head coach for 21 years, five at St. Francis (PA), his alma mater, from 1978-83, going 60-76. He has earned eight Coach of the Year honors, including MAAC Coach of the Year last season, and CollegeInsider.Com MAAC Coach of the Year honors, announced Friday.
Magarity had two All-MAAC Selections this season, Sean Kennedy, first team, and Rick Smith, second team, brining his total to 16 All-Conference members during his Marist tenure. He has also coached seven MAAC All-Academic Team selections over the five years Marist has been in the MAAC, and has coached three conference Players of the Year while at the helm of the Red Foxes.
