Greenville, NC - The Marist College softball team lost a pair of games on the first day of the East Carolina Tournament today in Greenville, NC. Playing in their first games of the season, the Red Foxes (0-2) first lost to Western Illinois 4-1 before dropping another 4-1 decision at the hands of Rhode Island.
Marist fell behind 4-0 against Western Illinois when junior Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ) knocked Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) in with a RBI double in the sixth inning. Gonnello went 1-2 and drew a walk in the game. Junior Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) who gave up four runs, one earned, in seven innings was charged with the loss, while Lindsay Tasker earned the win for the Westerwinds by giving up one run and four hits over seven innings.
In the second game against Rhode Island, the Red Foxes gave up four runs in the second inning, before a sacrifice fly by McEvily in the sixth put them on the board. Freshman Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) scored the only run for Marist. On the mound, Blake gave up four runs, one earned, in six innings in the loss. Winning pitcher Gwen Rack gave up one hit and one run in 5 1/3 innings for the Rams
The Red Foxes will return to action tomorrow Saturday, March 9th at the tournament facing East Carolina at 11:00 AM before taking part in bracket play at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
