April 14, 2002

Final Stats

New York, NY---Freshman Michael Curran (Shelton, CT) won the javelin throw, and junior Christopher McCloskey (Hopewell Junction, NY) broke the school record in the 1,500-meter run to lead the Marist College men's track team at the Columbia University Invitational, held Saturday at Baker Field in Manhattan.

Curran placed first in the javelin with a best throw of 59.44 meters (198 feet, 2 inches), just 1 feet, 4 inches less than the school record he set at the Monmouth Invitational in March. Teammate Taylor Twist (Smithfield, RI) was 16th in the event in 44.97 meters (149 feet, 10 inches).

McCloskey placed ninth in the 1,500 in 3:55.99, eclipsing the school record held by Benny Hefferon (3:57.12, in 1997). Freshman Adam Pakiela (Ridgefield, CT) also bettered a school record, in the 400 dash (51.41 seconds).

Marist runners had a strong showing in the 5,000-meter run. Senior co-captain Michael Nehr (West Babylon, NY) placed fourth in 15:10.78, just hours after running the 1,500 in 4:01.06. Junior Jamal Padgett (Syracuse, NY) ran a personal-best time of 15:33.27 and placed ninth. Sophomore Kirk Dornton (Syracuse, NY) was next in 15:38.12, followed closely by freshman Geoff Decker (Delmar, NY), 15:39.25. Sophomore Charlie Williams (Commack, NY) sliced more than 20 seconds off his previous best with a 17th-place time of 16:27.19.

The 400-meter relay team of Pakiela, Eli Bisnett-Cobb, David Taylor and Eric Stelz ran a season-best time of 44.43 seconds, good for 11th place.

The men's track team returns to action on Saturday, April 20 at the St. John's University Invitational in Queens.
