Red Fox Crew Teams Sweep 2002 MAAC Championship

New Rochelle, NY---The Marist College men's and women's crew teams swept the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rowing championships for the second straight season earlier this afternoon. The men finished the event with 120 points, followed by Manhattan (44 points) and Iona (32 points), while the women compiled 94 points, finishing ahead of Fairfield (83 points) and Loyola (57 points), in the competition held on the Orchard Beach Lagoon.

In the men's competition, the men's novice eight was victorious, completing the course in a time of 6:13.6, followed by the Marist B boat (6:31.6) and Fairfield (7:22.7). The men's JV four won easily in a time of 7:03.8, defeating Iona (7:20.3) and Manhattan (7:36.1). The men's varsity four claimed the win, crossing the finish line in 6:55.9, topping Manhattan (7:00.0) and Fairfield (7:11.4). In the men's novice four, the Red Foxes were again victorious in 7:09.7, winning easily over Iona (7:38.9) and Fairfield (7:44.0). The Red Foxes had a 1-2 finish in the men's varsity eight, with winning times of 6:03.5 and 6:12.7. Loyola College was third in the race, clocking 6:24.4.

On the women's side, the Red Foxes earned the win in the women's novice eight in a time of 7:26.8, defeating Loyola (7:31.5) and Fairfield (7:33.9). The women's JV four finished first with a time of 8:02.5, as they beat Fairfield (8:11.9) and Iona (8:17.0). In the women's varsity eight, the Red Foxes won comfortably in a time of 7:03.1, as they topped Fairfield (7:11.5) and Loyola (7:17.2). Marist had a pair of third place showings in the women's varsity four (8:07.2) and in the women's novice four (8:28.2).

The women's crew team will be competing tomorrow morning, as the Red Foxes take on the University of Connecticut, at 8:00 a.m., on the Poughkeepsie campus. The men's team will be back in action with the women on Saturday, April 27th, where they will be facing Williams College, Coast Guard, University of Rochester, and Bates, in a competition held on Lake Onota, NY. The first race is scheduled for 6:00 a.m.
