Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team completed a three-game weekend sweep of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe St. Peter's, 11-2, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. Marist sophomore Chris Tracz (North Branford, Conn.) struck out eight batters and did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work to earn the victory, and improve to 4-2 on the year.
The Red Foxes, 14-9 overall and 7-2 in MAAC play, took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Jimmy Board (Ambler, PA) led off the inning with a single, followed by a single from Jimmy Wills (Ft. Montgomery, NY). After the next two batters were retired, MAAC Pre Season Player of the Year Anthony Bocchino (Brooklyn, NY) lined a double down the left field line, giving Marist a 3-1 lead.
The Peacocks, 6-12 overall and 3-6 in the league, scored a run in the top of the sixth to close to 3-2, but would not get any closer. Marist blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth scoring four runs, and would tack on one in the seventh and three in the eighth for the final tally.
Bocchino would finish the game 3-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Matt Griffiths (Los Altos, CA) went 2-4 with two RBI and a runs scored on the afternoon, while John McGorty (West Sayville, NY), Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY) and Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) all added RBI's in the effort. McGorty was 3-5 with a runs scored, while O'Sullivan went 2-3. Jimmy Willis (Ft. Montgomery, NY) continued to hit the ball well, finishing the game 2-4 with two runs scored.
St. Peter's was led by the 2-4 effort of Josh Pineiro and Ryan Knapp. Doug Grant took the loss for the Peacocks, giving up six earned runs in 5.1 innings of work, striking out two and giving up nine hits. The Peacocks used four pitchers, allowing 111 runs, 10 earned, on 17 hits, while walking only one.
Chuck Bechtel (Royersford, PA) and Chris Homer (Jamesville, NY) tossed the final two innings, allowing no hits or walks, and each striking out two St. Peter's batters. Marist pitching allowed no earned runs on the afternoon and struck out 12 batters, while allowing only five hits.
Marist returns to action on Tuesday, April 9th, when it hosts Monmouth in a non-league contest, set to begin at 3:30 pm
