Lincoln, NE - The Marist College baseball team saw its 2002 season come to an end this evening, falling 5-2 in an elimination game, at the Lincoln Regional of the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes had defeated SMS Friday night, 5-4 in 11 innings, and lost 9-1 to Nebraska on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Chuck Bechtel started for the Red Foxes and pitched well, going 6.1 innings allowing three runs, only one earned. He gave up just five hits as he took the loass, falling to 8-5. In his effort, Bechtel struck out eight batters whiloe walking only three batters. Three Marist pitchers struck out 13 SMS batters, including four by Chris Homer who tossed 2.0 innings in relief for the second time in the tournament, and gave up just one hits in that time.
MArist trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth-inning when the Red Foxes tallied two runs, as Steve O'Sullivan scored on a single by Mike Sidoti and Anthony Bocchino scored when a Keith Brachold groundball squeaked through the legs of SMS second baseman Jeremy Isenhower.
Marist had the bases loaded in the seventh inning with two out, and had two runners on in both the eight and ninth innings but could not get to SMS reliever Bob Zimmerman, who picked up his second save of the day.
Bocchino finished the day 2-4 with a school record 92 base hits in a single season. John McGorty also had two hits for Marist, which had nine for the day, out hitting SMS 9-7.
The Red Foxes finished the year at 41-14, surpassing the school record of 33 wins, set in each of the last two seasons. For the third straight season Marist captured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament, and added the program's first-ever MAAC Regular Season title, winning a conference record tying 22 games in the process.
