Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing at Northeast Tournament

Providence, RI - The Marist College men's tennis team won 12 matches on Friday in action at the 2002 Northeast Tournament, held at Brown University. Other teams featured in the tournament are Harvard, Brown, Dartmouth, and St. John's.

In A1 Flight singles, Patrick Hofer (Villach, Austria) lost a hard-fought match to Arnaud Agniel of St. John's, 6-3, 6-3. Chris Hagen (Oslo, Norway) defeated Tiago Figuierero of Iona 6-0, 6-0 in A2 Flight singles. In A3 Flight, David Slater (St. Alban's, UK) won by default over Ross Pytko of Boston College, 6-1, 6-6. A4 Flight singles featured Martin Aldorsson (Kungsbacka, Sweden) as he won 6-1, 6-0 over Yusuf Randera-Roos of Harvard. Also in A4 Flight singles, Mark Santucci (Chepachet, RI) defeated Jonathon Ounjian of Boston College, 6-4, 6-2.

In B1 Flight singles, Viktor Sapezhnikov (Brooklyn, NY) took his match 6-1, 6-1 over Mark Prather of New Hampshire. B2 Flight singles featured Mark Nassif (Ames, IA) as he won 6-4, 6-4 over John Abella of Niagara. Alain Boletta (Abington, PA) rounded out the singles action as he lost 7-5, 6-2 to David Rueter of Niagara.

In D1 Flight doubles action, Hofer and Aldersson defeated Haimovic and Rabens from Harvard, 8-2. In the second round, they lost Kereshi and Paer of Dartmouth 9-8, (7-5). Slater and Hagen won in D2 Flight doubles over Clement and Teolis of New Hampshire, 8-2. They would then lose in the second round, 8-4, to Garcia and Ramos of Niagara. Santucci and Sapezhinkov played in D3 Flight doubles as they won 8-1 over Bulawtan and Kubacki of Boston University to advance to the second round. In second round play, they defeated Zarzycki and Saadallah of the University of Montreal, 8-4, to advance to the semifinals. Also, in D3 Flight doubles, Nassif and Boletta beat Goldberg and Wertanin of St. John's 8-6 to advance. In second round play, they beat Torgrison and Baber by default to advance to the semifinals.

The Red Foxes continue play at the Brown Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, September 21st-22nd.
