Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Breaks Even Against Rhode Island

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned a split with the University of Rhode Island today at the McCann Center Natatorium. The men improved to 10-0 with a 170-110 victory, while the women fell to 6-5 with a hard-fought 155-142 loss.

Jeffrey Paul (Meadowbrook, PA) was a double-winner for the Red Foxes, taking the 100 freestyle (48.20) and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.80). Kevin Connors (Lincroft, NJ) came out on top in the 200 backstroke (2:02.86), while Robert Dunn (Pittsford, NY) finished first in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.48). Joseph Murin (Queensbury, NY) touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly (2:01.06), as did Matthew Castillo (Jamaica, NY) in the 50 freestyle (22.16), Ricky Kapusta (Stamford, CT) in the 200 freestyle (1:47.67), and Henry Puretz (Poughkeepsie, NY) in the 1000 freestyle (9:57.05).

Joseph Pilewski (Sparta, NJ) also captured an individual win in the 100 backstroke (54.96), while Michael Guman (Stratford, CT) had a strong day on the boards, winning the 1-meter dive (266.18) and 3-meter dive (271.43) for the Red Foxes.

Missy Gifford (Glens Falls, NY) was the winner in the 1-meter dive (245.18) for the women, while Amber Van De Carr (Rhinebeck, NY) won the 3-meter dive (208.80) and placed second in the 1-meter dive (227.63). Courtney Milde (Succasunna, NJ) was victorious in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.78), and Jennifer Meyer (Fairport, NY) came away with a win in the 100 backstroke (1:02.87).

Karen Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) also had a first-place finish, winning the 200 backstroke (2:15.08), as well as Karen Finnerty (Midland Park, NJ) in the 500 freestyle (5:18.53).

The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, February 1st, when they travel to Baltimore, MD for a tri-meet against host UMBC and Old Dominion. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
