Bridgeport, CONN--The Marist College basketball team used a career-high 42 point effort from senior David Bennett to rally from a 12-point second half deficit, to defeat Saint Peter's, 91-86, at the Arena at Harbor Yard this afternoon.
With a blizzard raging outside the arena, Marist trailed 51-39 with 16:31 remaining in the game, before taking the reigns and outscoring the Peacocks 52-35 the remainder of the way. Bennett scored 32 of his points in the second half, including goin 4-4 from behind the line. After a slight delay because of leaking water, Marist inbounded the ball down 51-41 with 16:10 left in the game, and scored the next eight points. Bennett hit a three-pointer with 10:07 left to tie the game at 58-58, and Dennis Young scored 40 seconds later, his first field goal of the game, to give the Red Foxes a 60-58 lead, which it would never relinquish.
With the Peacocks within two points, 78-76 with 2:11 remaining, Bennett connected on 8-8 from the free throw line to help ice the win. Bennett shot 9-13 from the field for the game, including 5-7 from three-point land. His 19-20 effort from the free throw line is a career-night as well, going 16-16 in the second half.
Carl Hood had a career-night was well, recording his first collegiate doule-double. He scored 17 points, 10 in the second half, and finished with 10 rebounds. Nick Eppehimer scored 14 points, hitting four times from behind the three-point line. Chris Handy had nine boards in the efort and six points.
Marist improves to 10-14 overall and 6-9 in MAAC play. The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, February 23rd, hosting Iona in the home finale of the 2002-03 season.
