MAAC All-Academic Team Named For Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) named 12 Red Foxes to the 2003 All-Academic Team for men's and women's swimming and diving, it was announced on Thursday, February 20th. To receive this honor, students must be in their second year of residence at the collegiate institution, and have a grade point average of 3.20.

The men had five named to the team, which include senior Trevor Charles (Middletown, CT), senior Michael Guman (Stratford, CT), junior Ben Lakin (Fairport, NY), junior Anthony Manza (Brooklyn, NY), and junior Will Reagan (Waterbury, CT). Charles, Lakin, Manza, and Reagan were also named to the last year's team.

Charles finished second in the 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, and 200 backstroke, while swimming on four relay teams that finished first at the MAAC Championships last weekend at Loyola College in Baltimore. Guman performed well on the boards at the MAAC's, finishing first in the 1-meter dive and third in the 3-meter dive. Lakin finished seventh in the 400 individual medley and eighth in the 200 backstroke, while Manza placed fifth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Reagan finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

The women had seven named to the team, which include junior Karen Finnerty (Midland Park, NJ), junior Alyson Fiorillo (Pottsville, PA), junior Missy Gifford (Glens Falls, NY), junior Jennifer Meyer (Fairport, NY), junior Amber Van De Carr (Rhinebeck, NY), sophomore Sarah McKinney (Schaumburg, IL), and sophomore Katie Szajowski (Chatham, NJ). Finnerty, Fiorillo, and Gifford were named to last year's team as well.

Finnerty finished second in the 1650 freestyle and 1000 freestyle at the MAAC Championships, while Fiorillo came in first in the 100 butterfly. Gifford did well on the boards, placing first in the 1-meter dive and second in the 3-meter dive, and Meyer finished third in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 100 backstroke. Van De Carr placed fourth in both the 1-meter dive and 3-meter dive, while McKinney came in second in the 200 freestyle. Szajowski came in 13th in the 200 breaststroke.

The Marist men's team won their eighth consecutive MAAC Championship, while the women placed third. The Red Foxes will be sending 27 swimmers and divers to compete in the ECAC Championships at the University of Pittsburgh, which will be held from Friday, February 28, through Sunday, March 2nd.
