Hamilton, NY--Junior captain Adam Waterbury (Wallingford, CT) broke his own school record in the 35-pound weight throw and recorded a season-best performance in the shot put to lead the Marist College men's track team at the Class of 1932 Invitational at Colgate University on Saturday. The women also competed in several different events at the Invitational.
Waterbury placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 13.40 meters (43-11.75), eclipsing his previous school mark of 13.13 meters. In the shot put, Waterbury used a new spin approach and earned his best toss of the season - 14.11 meters (46-3.5), good for fifth place.
Senior captain Christopher McCloskey (Hopewell Junction, NY) led the Red Foxes on the track with a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run. McCloskey led wire-to-wire and won in 2:32:12. He also anchored the second-place 3,200-meter relay with an 800-meter split of 1:58.1 and minutes later anchored the 1,600 relay.
Marist runners earned three scoring spots in the 5,000-meter run. Leading the way was sophomore Geoffrey Decker (Delmar, NY), who placed second in a personal-best time of 15:37.11. Freshman Mike Schab (West Islip, NY) was fifth in 16:07.85 and junior Charles Williams (Commack, NY) was sixth in 16:28.28. In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Sean Hopkins (Brookhaven Village, NY) placed fifth in a personal-record time of 9:00.46. Freshman Rob DeAngelo (Brooklyn, NY) qualified for finals and finished fourth overall in the 55-meter high hurdles in 8.05 seconds.
Seven freshman and one sophomore competed on the women's side for the Red Foxes. Megan Schlittler (Brodhead, WI) led the team with a seventh place finish in the 400-meter dash, in a time of 1:03.45 seconds. Schlittler placed eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.25, while fellow freshman Lauren LeMoine (Latham, NY) finished 17th in a time of 29.39. In the 3200-meter relay, the team consisted of Mackenzie Klump (Fayetteville, NY), Andrea DiTrani (Staten Island, NY), Sheila Driscoll (Congers, NY), and Denise Tumulty (Rocky Point, NY) placed sixth in a time of 10:39.45.
In the field events, Lauren Farrell (Monroe, NY) and sophomore Amy McHugh (Syracuse, NY) finished 19th and 20th in the shot put, with throws of 8.79 and 8.65, respectively.
The men's team placed fifth out of nine scoring teams with a total of 47 points. The University of Buffalo won the meet with 176 points. The women's team placed ninth at the Invitational.
Next up for the Marist men's track team is the Fastrack Invitational, to be held Saturday, February 15 at Boston University. The women will be competing at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City, NY on February 14th.
