Riverdale, NY - The Marist College baseball team dropped the rubber game of a three game set, 7-1, to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe, Manhattan College, this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. The Red Foxes fall to 7-7 on the year and are now 1-2 in MAAC play, while the Jaspers improve to 7-9 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.
Manhattan struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first off of Marist starter Ryan Kondratowicz, who took the loss, falling to 2-1 on the year. The big inning for the Jaspers came in the third inning, as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Kondratowicz got the next two batters to pop-up to shortstop and had an 0-2 count on Frank Cappelo, before a bases clearing double.
Marist answered in the fourth inning when Keith Brachold singled to start the inning. Tim Allen hit a ball hard up the middle that was misplayed, and allowed Brachold to advance to second base. Mike Sidoti followed with a groundball to the shortstop, which forced Allen at second base, and allowed Brachold to score when the relay throw to first base went wild. The Red Foxes threatened in the sixth and seventh innings, putting a runner in scoring position in the sixth and then loading the bases in the seventh, before having the last seven batters of the game retired
The Jaspers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the scoring. Travis Timmons and Kevin Ool tossed four innings of scoreless relief for the Red Foxes. Timmons struck out two, without allowing a hit in his work, while Ool allowed one hit without a walk in his appearance.
The Red Foxes only managed fivve hits in the game, from five different batters, while stranding eight runners on base. The Jaspers had just eight hits in the contest, stranding five base runners
