Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team dropped its 2003 home opener to the Yale University Bulldogs, 4-1 this afternoon, on the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes fall to 7-8 on the year, while Yale improves to 6-7.
Yale got all the offense it would need in the second inning, putting up two runs, before tacking on insurance runs in the third and sixth innings. Dave Fortenbaugh walked with one out and advanced to third on a throwing error, on a ground ball hit by Steven Duke. Fortenbaugh would come around to score on a ground out by Mike Gulker, and Duke would score the eventual game-winning run on a single by Josh Zabar.
John McGorty and Chris Homer both threw well for the Red Foxes, with McGorty striking out the side in the eighth inning and Homer retiring the side in order in the ninth, with two strikeouts. George Heath took the loss (0-2), throwing five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out five. Marist pitchers struck out13 Yale batters in the game, while walking only one. Travis Timmons allowed one run on a hit in two innings of work, with three strikeouts.
John McGorty would sacrifice him to second base, where a single up the middle by Jimmy Board, would score Sidoti. The Red Foxes out hit Yale 5-4 in the game, and both teams committed three errors.
Yale starter Doug Shimokawa tossed three scoreless inning, striking out four and allowing only two hits to earn the win. Five Bulldog relievers would work the next six innings, allowing three hits, while walking six batters. Yale pitching stranded 12 Red Fox base runners in the game, while the Bulldogs just left four of their own runners on base.
Marist returns to action on Thursday, March 27th, traveling to Long Island to take on Stony Brook in a 3:00 pm non-conference match-up.
