COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Daryl Whitmer had two stolen bases, a triple and four RBI today as the Terps (4-7, 0-0 ACC) avoided their second late-inning loss in as many days with a controversial 11-8 win over Marist (5-1).
It was his four RBI, however, that helped propel the Terps to their first victory in three games, as the Terp pitching once again allowed Marist to mount a comeback in the latter stages of the game.
Chris Clem gave the Terps six solid innings, the third quality start by a Maryland starter in three games. He shut down Marist hitters to the tune of six hits, one earned run and four strikeouts before exiting to begin the seventh.
The Terps brought a 7-3 lead into that inning, which was quickly erased by the heart of the Red Foxes' lineup. Reliever Matt Basinger was able to get two outs on an RBI sacrifice fly and a pop out after allowing the first three batters to reach base in the inning.
But Todd Ainsworth, making his first appearance since Feb. 15, threw two wild pitches and gave up an RBI single to Marist second baseman Tim Allen as the Red Foxes crawled back ahead.
The loss was the first of Tyrell's career as a head coach since moving from pitching coach in the off-season.
