Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Marist College softball team (2-16) won its first game since its season opener with an 8-4 victory over Stony Brook at University Field on Tuesday afternoon. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Red Foxes got their bats going right away, as Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) singled to right field to open the game. Two batters later, Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) smacked a double to right field and Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ) followed with a two-run single to give Marist the early lead. The Seawolves countered in the bottom half of the inning with a double by Laura Bradford and a base hit by Kristen Brust. After Marist pitcher Elizabeth Moyer (Scio, NY) walked Hayley Durham to load the bases, Marissa Servello followed with a two-run single to even the game at 2-2.
Stony Brook (11-17) grabbed a 3-2 edge in the bottom of the second on Durham's RBI single up the middle, but the lead was short-lived. A Stony Brook error allowed leadoff batter Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) to advance to second, and she later reached third on a sacrifice bunt from Katie Eskin (Edison, NJ). Rawson then scored on a passed ball to knot the game at 3-3.
Again the Seawolves answered, with Amanda Cavitt and Stephanie DiBiase opening the bottom half of the inning with base hits. After Bradford reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Brust's RBI single sent DiBiase home, but Bradford was tagged out at home plate as Stony Brook settled for a 4-3 lead.
From there the Seawolves went cold, managing just two hits the rest of the game. Meanwhile, Marist exploded for six hits and four runs in the next two innings. In the fifth, Gonnello's RBI single scored McEvily, and Gonnello later scored on a passed ball. Then in the sixth inning, McHugh cranked a two-run homerun over the right field fence to give Marist a 7-4 advantage. The Red Foxes added another run in the final inning for the 8-4 victory.
McEvily finished 3-for-4 at the plate for Marist, while McHugh and Gonnello each added a pair of hits. Gonnello also finished with three RBI. For Stony Brook, DiBiase, Brust and Durham each had two hits while Servello drove in two runs.
Moyer (1-6) picked up the win on the mound, allowing four runs on 10 hits and striking out six. The Seawolves' Angela Andrews (6-10), who relieved starter Jessica Paparella in the fifth inning, was credited with the loss, giving up four runs on six hits and walking three with one strikeout.
