Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's lacrosse team fell to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Manhattan, 11-6, on Leonidoff Field this afternoon. The Red Foxes drop to 2-11 on the season, with a 2-5 record in MAAC play, while the Jaspers improve to 4-9, and are 3-5 in the conference.
Marist jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Dan Kushner (Southington, CT) and Pat Scully (Longmeadow, MA), before Manhattan went on a run of their own, scoring the next five goals to take a 5-2 lead with 7:56 to play in the first half. Andrew Walsh (Liverpool, NY) would stop the Jasper run, scoring off a feed from Josh Ben-Eliyahu (East Setauket, NY) with 1:34 left in the half to make it 5-3 at the break.
Manhattan outscored the Red Foxes 5-0 in the third, led by a pair of goals from Justin Otto to increase the lead to 10-3 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Red Foxes kept it close in the fourth when they scored three unanswered goals to cut the deficit to 10-6. Two of those goals came from Walsh as he finished with a hat trick on the day.
The Jaspers would tack on another goal with 24 seconds to play in regulation, when Mike Kelly scored on a breakaway off a pass from Otto for the final margin of victory.
Otto led Manhattan with four goals and an assist, while Eugene Tanner had two goals and three assists.
Walsh led Marist with three goals, while Kushner, Scully, and Jay Nahama (Hampton, NJ) each tallied a goal. Scully also added an assist on the day.
Bobby Gross (Huntington, NY) finished with 13 saves for the Red Foxes, while Matt Altomare collected 11 for the Jaspers.
The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, April 23rd, when they travel to Easton, PA for a non-conference game with Lafayette, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
