BUFFALO, N.Y. - Harpreet Padda went 6-for-9 from the plate on the day
and tossed two shutout innings to earn a save in the nightcap as
Canisius College (3-27-1, 2-14 MAAC) spilt a baseball doubleheader with
Marist College (24-13, 13-4 MAAC) at the Demske Sports Complex
Saturday. The Red Foxes won the first game 10-7, while the Golden
Griffins took the second contest 10-5.
Padda went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run in the first game and was
3-for-4 with a double and three runs in the second. The junior came on to
pitch the last two innings of the nightcap, allowed three hits and struck out
one to earn his first career save.
Danny Conrad was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and four RBI in the Griffs'
victory, while Matt VanGeene and Brandon Williams each went 1-for-3 with
two RBI. Dennis Wellman earned his first career victory on the mound
after throwing five innings and allowing seven hits and five runs.
Eric Johnson led Marist from the plate with a 2-for-4 effort with a homer and two RBI, while Keith Brachold was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Chuck Bechtel tossed 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits and nine runs,
four of which were earned.
Canisius took a 4-1 lead in the first inning on the strength of Brandon
Williams' two-out single up the middle that scored VanGeene and
Conrad. The Griffs struck for two more in the third when Padda led off with
a double, Conrad walked, and VanGeene drove both runners in with a
double down the right field line.
Trailing 9-1 in the fifth, Marist rallied for four runs. The Red Foxes loaded
the bases and scored one run on a passed ball. Bryan Towler drove in
another run with a sacrifice fly, and Johnson plated two with a home run to
left field. Canisius answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Padda
singled, and Conrad drove him in with a double.
Canisius collected a season-high 17 hits in the first game but left 10
runners on base. Ishmael Cox went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI,
while VanGeene was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Conrad was 2-for-5 with an
RBI, and John Cicero went 2-for-4.
John McGorty led Marist from the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Mike Sidoti was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Brachold was 2-for-5
with an RBI. Chris Tracz earned the win on the mound after throwing six
innings and allowing five earned runs. Chris Homer picked up the save,
tossing 1.2 hitless innings in relief.
With Marist clinging to an 8-7 lead in the top of the ninth, Tim Allen led off
the frame with a homer, and Kevin Grauer scored McGorty with an RBI
single up the middle. Homer struck out the first two batters in the bottom
of the frame, and got a ground out to short to end the game.
The teams will play the final contest of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the
Demske Sports Complex.
