Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team dropped its final non-conference game of the regular season, 8-7, to visiting Seton Hall this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The loss drops the Red Foxes to 29-17-1 on the year, while the Pirates improve to 21-23.
The two teams stranded a combined 25 runners, 14 of them by the Red Foxes, including a pair in scoring position in the ninth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third base, Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) grounded a ball up the middle, which Seton Hall shortstop Santiago Chi, dove, and threw him out at first base, ending the game.
Marist struck first scoring in the first, with Seton Hall tying the game in the top of the second. The Red Foxes added three in the bottom of the second, and two in the bottom of the third, to take a 6-3 lead. After a scoreless fourth frame, Seton Hall chased Marist starting pitcher Scott Chambers (Albany, NY) with four runs in the fifth, to take a 7-6 lead. The score remained there until a leadoff homer run from Matt Cuttruff to start the eighth. Marist answered with a run in the eighth, and Chris Homer (Jamesville, NY) fanned the two batters he faced in the ninth, with runners on second and third, to set up the Red Foxes near comeback.
Homer went 0.2 with two of the Red Foxes six pitched strikeouts. Chambers allowed seven runs, five earned, walking two, in his 4.0 innings of work. Peter Fuller (Plymouth, MN) went 3.0 innings of relief, allowing only two hits, and Ryan Kondratowicz (Fort Lauderdale, FL) allowed one run on three hits in his 1.1 innings of work.
Mike Sidoti (Staten Island, NY) went 2-5 with a solo homer and two runs scored, while Jimmy Board (Ambler, PA) was 3-4 with an RBI on the day. Marist racked up 14 hits, a pair more than the 12 its pitchers allowed.
Marist will return to action on Thursday, traveling to New Rochelle, for a 3:00 pm match-up with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe, Iona. The two teams will finish the set on Friday, at noon, with a double-header. The Red Foxes need one win to clinch a berth in the 2003 MAAC Tournament, May 22-24th at Dutchess Stadium
