Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team won its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game, defeating Fairfield University 59-50 in front of 2,288 fans at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes improve to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in MAAC play.
Fairfield score the first four points of the second half to tie the score 26-26 and took a 32-29 lead with 15:06 remaining in the game. Marist answered with a 10-0 run over the next 3:11 to take the lead for good, 39-32. The Stags (8-6; 1-2) scored eight of the next 10 points to close to within one-point, 41-40 with 8:55 remaining, but would get not closer. Eric Siegrist drained a three-pointer with 8:11 to play, followed by a jumper from Chris Handy with 6:34 to go to put Marist up 46-41. Fairfield would score next but Siegrist and Handy went back-to-back again to put the Red Foxes up 50-43 with 4:21 to go.
Siegrist and Handy helped Marist to a 32-4 advantage off of the bench, and were the only two Red Foxes in double-digits. Siegrist scored a career-high 15 points on 5-7 shooting from the field, including 2-2 from three-point land. Handy, who tallied his second double-double of the year, had 11 points, 5-6 from the field, and 13 rebounds in the game. Jared Jordan had six points, six assists and four rebounds in his 28 minutes, while not committing a turnover.
Marist dominated on the glass, 39-23 for the contest, and did not allow a Fairfield player to record more than four rebounds in the game. Terrence Todd led the Stag with 14 points, followed by 12 from Rob Thomson and 11 from Deng Gai.
The Red Foxes, winners of four of their last five games, shot 51.1 percent, 23-45, from the field, and a season best 55.6 percent, 5-9, from behind the three-point line. The Stags were held to 34.6 percent from the field in the first-half, and shot 40.4 percent, 21-52 for the game. Marist allowed the Stags to shoot just 14.3 percent, 2-14 from behind the arc.
There were nine lead changes and six ties in the contest.
The Red Foxes have won back-to-back MAAC contests for the first time this season.
Marist returns to action against Canisius on Friday, January 16th, at the McCann Center.
