Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's basketball moved to 11-7 overall, 7-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) as they defeated Loyola College 64-56 this evening at the McCann Center. Loyola falls to 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
Senior Nina Vecchio hit six of seven free throws in the last 1:47 to stymie the Greyhounds last second surge. The Red Foxes were up 55-45 with 4:07 remaining went on a 6-0 spurt. After a pair of made Kristen Keller free throws, Loyola's Lauren Troupe sank a three-pointer at the 1:51 to cut the gap to five. The Red Foxes stepped up their defense and was able to hang on for the win.
After exchanging baskets early in the first half, Marist began to add to pull away going up by as much as 14 points on a Maureen Magarity jumper. Troupe sank a free throw with 22 seconds left to bring Loyola within 33-22 going into the break.
Keller led the Red Foxes with a career-high 19 points, while Vecchio added a season-high 16 points. Senior Stephanie Del Preore chipped in with 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
For the Greyhounds, Troupe scored 20 points in 26 minutes. Jill Henn added 11 points on 3-6 shooting. Krystle Harrington was also in double-figures with 10 points.
As a team, Marist committed only 11 turnovers and forced Loyola to turn the ball over 20 times. The Red Foxes picked up 18 points off those turnovers.
The Red Foxes are back in action on Saturday, January 31st at they travel to Rider. Tip-off is slated for 1:00pm, followed by the men's game against the Broncs.
