The Marist volleyball team lost a heartbreaker to Loyola, 3-2 tonight at the McCann Center. After taking games one and two, the Red Foxes faltered in games three and four, forcing a decisive game five that Loyola took, 15-8. Senior captain Amy Gillespie (Lebo, KS) put on a stellar performance in the final match of her career, tallying a career-high 22 kills, 15 digs and two solo blocks.
The Red Foxes cruised to wins in games one and two, hitting .462 and .442 as a team, respectively. Sophomore Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, PA) paced Marist in game one with nine kills on .667 hitting to give Marist the 30-24 win. It was more of the same for Kenworthy and the Lady Red Foxes in game two, as she and Gillespie turned up the heat for a 30-25 win.
In games three and four, Loyola's Becky Greenup and Becky Corb took matters into their own hands, powering their team to 30-25 and 30-26 wins, respectively. Corb and Greenup would eventually tally 24 kills apiece in the win.
Kenworthy hammered home a total of 25 kills on the night, a new career high along with two service aces. Classmate Sally Hanson (Guerneville, CA) picked up 11 kills and two solo blocks while classmate Kim McEathron (Ballston Spa, NY) had another solid night, recording seven kills and pacing the defense with 17 digs. Junior captain Meghan Cochrane (Placentia, CA) had a double-double as she recorded a career high 68 assists along with 10 digs while classmate and fellow captain Katie Lux (Wantagh, NY) tallied 17 digs on defense. Sophomore Stefanie Miksch (Austin, TX) rounded out the double-digit dig brigade, with 11 of her own while classmate Jackie Poston (Huntingtown, MD) picked up eight kills on .462 hitting along with two blocks.
Tonight's contest closed out the 2004 campaign for the Lady Red Foxes, who finished the season 12-16 (2-7 MAAC). The team will graduate two seniors, Gillespie and player turned assistant coach Aline DosSantos. Marist would like to congratulate them and thank them for their lasting contributions to Red Foxes Athletics.
