POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Sophomore sharpshooter Will Whittington (Kingwood, Tx.) knocked down six of eight three-point attempts to lead the homestanding Red Foxes of Marist to a 83-79 win over visiting Lafayette Friday evening at the James J. McCann Center. The Red Foxes improved to 4-4 overall with the win, while the Leopards dropped their sixth straight contest to fall to 1-6. It was the fourth game this season that Whittington has connected on six long range attempts in a game.
Whittington had 27 in the victory, bettering his career-high of 25 set against Vermont earlier this season. Twenty-one of his points came in the second half. Jared Jordan posted 11 points and 10 assists for his third consecutive double double. He narrowly missed garnering a triple double by snaring eight rebounds, which tied a new career-high. Swingman Carl Hood also posted 12, while Ryan Stilphen led the way on the glass with nine rebounds.
Lafayette finished the game with five players in double figures, led by Sean Knitter's 14 points. Andrei Capusan (13), Marcus Harley (13), Jamaal Douglas (12), and Matt Betley (12) also entered double digits.
The Red Foxes came out of the gate shooting 53.6 percent (15-for-28) in the first half and clung to a two-point (39-37) advantage at the break. Lafayette shot 40.6 percent in the first stanza (13-for-32).
Marist went up by as many as 18 in the second half (78-60) on a three-pointer by Whittington at the 5:40 mark before the Leopards stormed back on a 19-3 run over the next 4:48 to pull to within two (81-79) on a three-pointer from the corner by Harley with 52 seconds left. However, Harley missed a layup to win the game shortly thereafter and Whittington sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
For the game, the Red Foxes shot 45.2 percent (28-for-62) for the game, while Lafayette hit 40.6 percent (28-for-69). Marist hit 52.6 percent from three-point range (10-for-19), while Lafayette knocked down just 30.3 percent (10-for-33). Marist struggled mightily from the free throw line, hitting just 60.7 percent (17-for-28), while Lafayette shot 76.5 percent (13-for-17).
Marist will head to St. John's for its next contest, a 2:00 p.m. tip on Sunday, December 19th.
