Baltimore, Md. - The Marist men's swimming and diving team (8-0, 7-0 MAAC) swept all three of its opponents at the H2Ounds Invitational this weekend. In doing so, the Red Foxes improved to 60-0 in their ten years of MAAC competition. Sophomore Daniel Garaffa and senior co-captain Matthew Castillo each won two individual events and were part of two winning relays on Day 2.
Marist defeated two conference schools, stopping host Loyola 235-97 and besting Niagara 275-59. The Red Foxes also downed non-conference opponent Colgate 247-89.
Garaffa picked up wins in the 100 backstroke (53.73 seconds) and 200 backstroke (1:54.17). Sophomore Dave Schnitzer took second in the 100 while classmate Brandon Youse did likewise in the 200.
Castillo earned his victories in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. He won the 100 in a time of 59.44 seconds while taking the 200 in 2:10.04. Freshman Greg Jablonski was second in the 200 and third in the 100.
Two other Red Foxes picked up individual wins as senior co-captain Jeffrey Paul took the 100 freestyle in 47.55 seconds while sophomore Nick Chevalier won the 500 freestyle in 4:45.76. Classmate Wesley Gardner was third in that event, finishing less than six seconds behind Chevalier.
Both the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relay races resulted in wins for Marist. The 200 medley squad, which consisted of Garaffa, Castillo, junior Kevin Connors and Paul, touched first in 1:37.10. The 800 freestyle relay team won in 7:04.39 and was made up of junior Joseph Pilewski, Garaffa, Jablonski and Castillo.
Freshman Jesus Santos placed second on the 3-meter diving platform with a score of 334.15.
Marist, which concluded its conference slate today, does not compete again until the home finale against Southern Connecticut State at 1 p.m. January 17.
