Baltimore, MD -- The Marist College women's basketball team made another statement on the road rallying to knock off Loyola 61-58 this evening in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action in Baltimore, MD.
Marist is now 15-9 overall and 11-4 in MAAC play, a full game ahead of Niagara and Siena, who are 10-5 in conference action. The win also clinches the Red Foxes at least a fourth-seed in the MAAC Tournament and the program's first-ever MAAC Tournament bye.
The night started off on the wrong foot, with the Greyhounds taking a 17-4 lead in the first half. The Red Foxes however, who clinched the program's first winning season since in over a decade, were not to be denied. The first 20 points of the game came from just two players for the Red Foxes as senior Maureen Magarity and junior Kristin Keller kept the Red Foxes in the contest. Stephanie DelPreore became the third player to score with 1:40 left in the half, converting two free throws. Marist managed to cut the lead to only three-points at halftime, trailing 29-26.
The teams were tied 34-34 early in the second half, but the Red Foxes could not get over the top. Loyola led 51-47 with 5:00 and Marist went to the final media timeout, with 3:34 remaining, tied 54-54. The Greyhounds scored next setting up the Marist run to a victory.
Keller followed the Loyola basket with her second three pointer of the game, and the seasons, to put Marist on top for the first time, 57-56 with 2:59. Vicki Wancel sealed the game with :18 remaining on the clock as she drove the baseline and laid the ball in off of the glass for the final advantage.
Magarity led the Red Foxes with 17 points as well as pulling down eight rebound and dishing out three assists. Del Preore scored 10 points, had five boards, three assists and two steals, while Keller came off of the bench to tally 16 points and ne reoubnds, as well as two blocked shots.
The narrow margin of victory is the second close road game in a row for the Red Foxes. Marist knocked of Saint Peter's 54-51 on Saturday. It was the Red Foxes first win ever at Saint Peter's and was again dramatic, with Magarity hitting a late jumper on her way to a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Marist returns to action on Friday, February 20th, when MAAC foe Fairfield visits the McCann Center for a 7:00 pm contest.
